2013 One Crafty Contest – Final Three

Many of you have been following the One Crafty Contest at One Artsy Mama, so this news is not new to you! However, if you’re just hearing about this, I’m happy to announce that I’ve made it to the final 3!  I am still in shock about this.  I entered the contest mainly just for fun and to ‘try’ but with absolutely no expectations.
One Crafty Contest
It started out with 82 entries.  20 were voted in to be contestants.  There have been 5 rounds of crafts. each featuring a specific material.  It is now down to the final 3 and time to vote for the winner!

I don’t want to just shamelessly ask you to vote for me… but…. vote for me?  Ok, seriously, if I was your favorite crafter for the contest, then vote for me.  If I wasn’t, then vote for your favorite.  This should really be about talent and not about popularity.  That being said, I DO feel like I did a good job. I put countless hours of planning and crafting into my entries.  (I spent almost 30 hours alone on the Paper Boutique) I think my hubby and kids are happy that this is coming to a close so they can see my face more often!

VOTE HERE!

There are 3 winners.  So whether or not I ‘win’, I still feel like I’ve won.  Amy at One Artsy Mama has provided a small overview of all of my crafts in the contest, so you can see what I’ve done when you go to vote!  If you want a more detailed look into my crafts, you can find my posts about them HERE.  The Paper Boutique is the only one I haven’t posted about (yet). I also haven’t posted about my burlap project, but we weren’t allowed to reveal which was our craft until about 5 minutes ago. Mine was the purse, by the way. You can read about those HERE and HERE.

I also want to say thank you to everyone who has been following the contest and voting! Whether you voted for me or not, you’ve made the contest what it is. 🙂 And Amy, if you’re reading this, thanks for putting some extra fun into my life this past month!  I think you worked harder than the contestants to make this contest happen!  You are amazing!

Please be sure to visit their blogs and WELCOME them as co-hosts!

Here’s how it works:  when you link up on one blog, it will show up on ALL FIVE BLOGS!  That’s a lot of extra exposure for you.  Also, since there are five co-hosts, there will be five features each week!  Not only will the features be shown on each blog, but they will be posted to all five Facebook pages, and on our collective Pinterest board.  Are you as excited as I am?!

You may recognize 2 of the co-hosts names.  That’s right! They are fellow contestants in this year’s One Crafty Contest!  Randi won 2 rounds in a row! A HUGE congratulations to her!! And Shannon is in the final 3 with me!!  Awesome! This is a perfect testament to just how friendly the bloggy world is.  These ladies did not become rival enemies of mine, but instead, wonderful bloggy friends! I am so happy they are joining me for this party!

Speaking of the One Crafty Contest… VOTING once again starts today and ends tomorrow (Tuesday) at noon EST. This is the final round of crafts. We had to use burlap this week. Please be sure to come back WEDNESDAY to vote one last time for your favorite over-all crafter to determine the winner!

You can read all about my participation in the contest and see my past entries HERE.

Last week we had to use paper in our craft.  Like I’ve already mentioned, I’ve made it into the top 3! WOW!  I did not expect that!

This was my entry along with the description I submitted:
Paper Boutique

“Paper! There’s so much you can do with paper.  I had a hard time deciding, but finally settled on my Paper Boutique.  I made a two-part silicone mold and filled it with paper clay I made from scratch to create the three dress forms.  The base of each dress form is also made from paper clay.  I assembled them with dowels and started working on my dresses.
I wore out my paper punch on the dress on the left.  Each butterfly was hand placed and glued.  I made a paper flower for the belt by cutting out and shaping each petal. I made a small paper purse to match.
The middle dress has several paper layers for the skirt, and a little bit of tulle. I paper mached the bodice on and added braided tulle for the belt.  This dress was accessorized with a homemade ‘pearl’ necklace.
The right dress was made by layering A LOT of leaves I punched out and gluing each one in place.  This bodice is also paper mache. I added a bright necklace to match.
When the dresses were done, I made a storefront complete with a paper banner that says ‘Boutique’.
The child in me had a lot of fun dressing up the dress forms!”

On Display Monday Link Party #5 Features

It’s Monday, which means it’s time for some On Display Monday party features!
treepartybutton
This week was a small turnout so…. everyone is getting featured!
~~~
My blog is still pretty new, so I don’t expect a HUGE turnout like the more established blogs get.  However, since a few links isn’t really enough to keep this party going each week, I’ve decided to MAKE it bigger!
Ready for some good news?  Next week, the On Display Monday link party will be brought to you by MANY blogs!  I’ve teamed up with some awesome co-hosts!  Why is this better for you?  If you link up on one blog, it will show up on ALL of the blogs giving you a lot more exposure.  Cool, huh?  Because of this, there will be no link up this week.  We’ll start fresh next Monday, and I’ll introduce you to all of your co-hosts.  So make sure to come back next Monday.
~~~
I have a little snippet of more good news. I made it through another round of the One Crafty Contest :)!  Our material this time was glitter.
I made this washer and cookie cutter suncatcher/wind chime.  You can read all about it HERE and see my past entries HERE. windchime1
AND Don’t forget voting for round 4 starts TODAY in the One Crafty Contest. This time the material is paper. Vote for your favorites and hopefully one of them is mine! Voting ends tomorrow (Tuesday) at noon EST.

Washer Suncatcher/Wind chime

I made it through ANOTHER round of the One Crafty Contest! I still can’t believe I was voted in as a contestant let alone that I’ve made it so far! Thank you to everyone who has been voting and sending me kind words of encouragement. You can find all my past projects and read about my participation in the contest HERE.

DIY Washer Suncatcher/Wind Chime
The latest round required us to use glitter. My entry was this washer and cookie cutter suncatcher/wind chime. It was NOT, however, my first project, and was really only half of what I wanted my final entry to be.

DIY Washer Suncatcher/Wind Chime
(it’s  hard to make out the letters without the glitter coloring each letter)

I worked SO hard on garden art made out of washers. I spelled out the word “bloom” with different sizes of washers and made the curves of the letters into flowers. I had the whole thing glued together (I even super glued my finger to a cookie sheet in the process). I had the washers glittered, but then I moved it to keep it safely away from my kids, and the whole thing broke since the super glue wasn’t set yet! I had planned to make it the top of my wind chime instead of the rod I used. So instead, I added the cookie/fondant cutters to my final project so it wasn’t so plain. I guess it was meant to be though, because the final project was good enough to put me in the top 5!

This project was actually pretty easy, but really time consuming. It required A LOT of drying time.

DIY Washer Suncatcher/Wind Chime
I covered cookie sheets with aluminum foil and then put wax paper on top. I started by laying out the different sizes of washers until I had a pattern I liked. Then I decided how many colors of glitter to use and what order they would be in. I filled the center of each washer with Mod Podge. It worked best to fill it with a thin layer, but not so thin that it would pull away from the sides as it dried. To prevent drips, I filled a children’s oral syringe with the Mod Podge. It worked perfectly! I filled the cookie cutters the same way.

DIY Washer Suncatcher/Wind Chime
Then I sprinkled on the glitter and waited, and waited, and waited for it to dry. Because of the deadline for the contest, I ended up putting the cookie sheets in my oven on the lowest temperature to speed dry the Mod Podge. The cookie cutters were especially slow to dry, so they spent several hours in the oven! I would have preferred to let it all air dry. The oven made some of the wax paper fuse to the back of the washers. The ones that did air dry popped right off the wax paper.

DIY Washer Suncatcher/Wind Chime
(here you can see the wax paper that fused to the back of the washers and some undried glue in the cookie cutters)

When it was mostly dry, I shook off all the extra glitter. The Mod Podge dries clear, so it created a little window in the middle of each washer with suspended glitter (unfortunately the pictures don’t show this well). Then I laid out all the washers the way I wanted it to look in the end, but upside down so I could glue strong fishing line to the back of each piece.

DIY Washer Suncatcher/Wind Chime
I primed and spray painted a wooden dowel in a metallic silver to match the washers. I tied on each string of the wind chime, measured carefully so they were evenly spaced, and then glued each of the tied strings to the dowel so they wouldn’t slide around. All that was left to do was hang it up!

(So pretty! I actually used ultra fine iridescent cosmetic glitter for all the white pieces to give it extra sparkle!)
